What the inspector found
- Hygienic food handling Generally satisfactory
- Cleanliness & condition of the building Generally satisfactory
- How well they manage food safety Good
An inspection scores three things: how food is handled, the physical condition of the premises, and how much the inspector trusts management to keep standards up. At The Shakespeare Inn none of the three raised a concern, the overall rating is only ever as strong as its weakest area, so a clean sweep is what produces a high score.

Over the last 18 months we have sought to increase the dining space in the pub to benefit our loyal customers. Once all of the planning applications were approved the brewery appointed the building companies to start the work. When the new kitchen was installed, we realised that it was too small to work productively in, so to keep the kitchen open we temporarily moved the cold larder side of the kitchen into the annex. This was not ideal as it was carpeted so difficult to clean. The builders returned and we had a meeting regarding the structural points raised by the E H O and a snagging list of items missed by the builders. Some of these have been rectified already and many others are being sorted asap. I have emailed a copy of the minutes taken by the Punch and the builders of the plan moving forward. I feel that the grade 3 does not reflect the level of cleanliness we are proud of and because this is based on structural shortfalls. The score of 3 which is Generally Satisfactory was issued primarily because of structural shortfalls. which were due to works beyond our control. Rest assured we are doing everything in our power to complete the structural work and increase the score issued by the inspector."
