The rating: 1 - Major improvement necessary

How it compares in Denbighshire
A 1 is rare: only 14 of 1,009 rated places in Denbighshire score this low, about one in 72. By contrast 81% of the borough holds a 5, so this is well below what the council's inspectors normally find.

What the inspector found
- Hygienic food handling Very good
- Cleanliness & condition of the building Improvement necessary
- How well they manage food safety Major improvement necessary
An inspection scores three things: how food is handled, the physical condition of the premises, and how much the inspector trusts management to keep standards up. At North Wales Bowls Centre the inspector recorded concerns over the condition of the premises and confidence in management. Because the overall rating is only ever as strong as its weakest area, that is what holds the score down.
What the business says

DLL’s food and beverage provisions have always taken pride in their exemplary standards of food hygiene. Our food hygiene processes, based on Food Standards Agency guidance, have served us well, illustrated by the fact that prior to this Inspection, all of our facilities had held 5-star food hygiene ratings.

In the period leading up the Inspection visit, we had reported an issue to a specialist contractor in accordance with our procedures, and we believed we were proactively managing the issue and implementing all of the contractor’s recommendations.

Whilst we are naturally disappointed with the findings, we accept them and have already taken immediate steps to implement the additional and secondary processes that were recommended by the Inspection team.

We will be requesting a reinspection, with a view to restoring a rating which is a true reflection of our high standards.

We are extremely proud of the reviews we regularly receive from customers and we have built a strong following both locally and from visitors to the area. We want to reassure them that this is a one-off issue and not a true reflection of the high quality offer at the North Wales Bowls Centre.

Is North Wales Bowls Centre safe to eat at?

When was North Wales Bowls Centre last inspected?

Who decides the rating?

Is this your business?
A rating of 1 is public, and most customers look. Only 18% of people say they would order from a business rated 2 or below, against 94% from one rated 4. Delivery platforms may decline to list you.
We cannot change this rating, and nor can you. It was set by an environmental health officer at Denbighshire, and it stands until they inspect again. What you can do:
- Fix what the inspector found, then ask the council for a re-inspection. Most charge between £120 and £316, and will not re-visit within three months of the original inspection.
- If you believe the rating is simply wrong, you have 21 days from being notified to appeal to the council. That is 21 calendar days, not working days.
- You may submit a right to reply at any time. It is published alongside the rating, here, and on the FSA's own site.
